Top 7 Energy Wasting Habits You Should Change Today

Every time we check our energy bills, our eyebrows are raised as how come the billing is so high. But have you ever thought that we have certain bad habits, which lead to considerable energy wastage and hence the increased bills.

Changing these habits might help in saving great amounts on energy bills.

Mentioned below find some of the most common energy wasting habits that should be checked right away:

1. Keeping lights and fans on all the time

In many homes, you will find that the lights and fans are on all throughout the day.

During day time, there is no need of lights, but still the lights are on.

The same applies for fans as well. Infact many people leave the lights and the fans running even while going out.

This can be fixed easily.

Make it a habit of switching off lights and fans the moment you come out of a room.

Slowly this habit will make you turn off lights and fans while you are leaving the house.

2. Looking through the refrigerator

This is something that we often do.

We open the refrigerator door and check out food items inside.

Infact sometimes, we keep the fridge door open and keep on thinking what we need exactly. You might not be aware of the fact but these few seconds add up to the bill. Infact it has been calculated that on average, the time spent in front of opened refrigerators is almost 10 hours in a year.

Be little careful and save extra money on this.

3. The TV runs even while you are asleep

Many people have the habit of watching TV while going to sleep.

And the TV keeps running even after you fall asleep. Infact it keeps on running till next morning till the time you get up.

If you are lucky, someone from your family might come and put off the TV.

Next time if you are feeling too sleepy while watching TV, switch it off and doze off.

4. Using incandescent bulbs

Incandescent light sources consume hell lot of energy.

It is recommended to shift to CFL lights.

Infact now LED lights have made entry into the market. Though they might be expensive initially as their costs are high, but they are highly cost-effective on the long run.

They bring down energy bills considerably.

It is possible to save quite a lot with modern lighting systems.

5. Keeping cell phones and other appliances plugged in even after they are fully charged

We often put our cell phones and other electronic appliances on charge and even after they are fully charged, we forget to take the plug off. You might not know, but this adds to energy bills in little amounts.

If many such appliances are kept on this mode, it might add to the bill on the long run.

So take the appliance off the charger the moment it is fully charged.

6. Not changing air filters in HVAC units

Filters in HVAC units trap particles from the air and keep the air clean.

Therefore these filters need to be cleaned on regular intervals. In case the filters are not clean, more energy is required for pulling in the air in the HVAC system.

And this naturally needs more electricity, thus raising energy bills significantly.

Clean air filters after every 3 months so that the HVAC runs well consuming normal energy.

7. Washing clothes in hot water in washing machine

Majority of the energy used in running a washing machine goes in heating water.

But this can be reduced considerably if you switch from hot water to cold water.

General clothes can be washed well in cold water only. Only if clothes are very dirty and greasy, use warm water for cleaning.

Try these habits and see energy bills dropping greatly within few months.
